PROJECT CAIRN
1942–1944
Early work funded through military contracts.
Officially, Voss studied:
- directed acoustic demolition
- subterranean shockwave propagation
- uranium geology
- reinforced bunker construction
Unofficially… Several notebooks repeatedly reference “Boundary Stress”
He proposed that reality itself behaved like a material under tension.
One margin note simply says, “Steel bends. Stone fractures. Reality stretches.”
THE WESTERN COLORADO CAVES
Almost every expedition occurred inside the limestone cave systems of western Colorado.
Voss became convinced the caves were unique because they naturally distorted measurements.
Examples include,
- compass drift
- impossible echo timing
- survey errors
- missing time
- unexplained electrical discharge
Military surveyors repeatedly re-measured several chambers.
Every map was different.
Every map claimed to be correct.
One frustrated surveyor scribbled:
“Either we’re drunk or the cave moves when we leave.”

Temporal Boundary Compression
This appears to be Voss’s first successful experiment.
Rather than moving matter through time…
He temporarily moved causality.
A laboratory rat consistently reached food several seconds before the maze gate opened.
The gate mechanism later failed inspection.
No malfunction was found.
Human Trials
Test Subjects:
17 military volunteers
Results:
Nine disappeared.
Five reappeared hours later.
Three returned weeks before they had entered.
One subject aged approximately twenty-seven years.
Another became biologically younger by approximately four months.
Consistent Observation
Every successful temporal event ended immediately after sudden bursts of bright flashing light.
Voss never explains why.
He simply writes, “Rapid discontinuous illumination appears to force causal convergence.”
PROJECT LATTICE
1945
Perhaps the most disturbing work.
Voss discovered microscopic crystal structures that continually reproduced their own geometry.
They were neither biological nor mechanical.
They simply…
continued.
Growing.
Repeating.
Correcting themselves.
He refers to them only as, Recursive Fractal Seeds
Properties
The structures:
- ignored ordinary growth limits
- spread across stone
- propagated along bone
- organized surrounding tissue
One page states, “The seed is less interested in matter than arrangement.”
Failed Experiment
A laboratory wall slowly became covered in repeating geometric ridges.
Workers complained that:
- rooms appeared larger inside
- rulers gave inconsistent measurements
- corners became difficult to perceive
When the laboratory ceiling skylight was opened the effect rapidly halted.
Repeated laboratory testing demonstrated strong ultraviolet illumination consistently disrupted active fractal growth.
Mirror Studies
Several photographs are marked, “Reflection reveals true topology.”
Ordinary photographs appear normal.
Photographs taken with mirrors positioned beside the growth reveal additional geometric structures invisible to the naked eye.
Voss writes, “Reflection exposes incomplete dimensional occupation.”
PROJECT CANTICLE
1946
Originally intended as battlefield communication.
Eventually transformed into behavioral control.
Voss discovered ordinary human anatomy physically could not generate the required harmonic structure.
Subjects underwent increasingly severe skeletal reconstruction.
Jaw architecture.
Sinus cavities.
Teeth.
Rib spacing.
Even spinal curvature.
Everything became an acoustic instrument.
Result
Subjects produced vocalizations impossible under normal anatomy.
Observers experienced:
- involuntary emotional synchronization
- compulsive imitation
- shared intrusive thoughts
- temporary identity confusion
Curious Observation
One laboratory assistant accidentally activated two calibration speakers simultaneously while recording a trial.
The experiment ended abruptly.
Voss’s notes dismiss the event, “Interference from poorly tuned equipment invalidated the trial. Recalibration required.”
Elsewhere, buried in equipment maintenance logs, appears a handwritten reminder, “Oscillator B continues drifting toward 512 cycles per second. Correct before further testing.”
Neither note calls attention to the number, and it is never explained. A careful reader might eventually notice that every successful demonstration omitted that drifting oscillator.
THE PHOTOGRAPHS
There are ninety-three surviving photographs.
The early ones show:
- equipment
- cave entrances
- military personnel
The later ones become… difficult.
Subjects cast incorrect shadows.
Rock walls continue behind people who should be blocking them.
One image contains six researchers.
Only five appear in the reflection of a polished instrument housing.
No annotation.
AUDIO REELS
Most contain ambient cave recordings.
Jimmy slowed several down.
Hidden beneath the echoes are… voices.
Not language.
Conversation.
Multiple speakers talking over one another.
Sometimes they appear before the original sound.
Sometimes afterward.
FILM FOOTAGE
A surviving 16mm reel documents a spatial experiment.
The camera follows a researcher walking down a straight tunnel.
Halfway through…
He exits the tunnel behind the cameraman.
No cut.
No splice.
Voss calmly remarks, “Excellent. Local geometry accepted revision.”
TEST SUBJECT NOTES
Most subjects eventually developed common traits:
- recurring spiral dreams
- obsession with symmetry
- fear of mirrors
- hearing conversations inside stone
- inability to describe right angles accurately
Many also developed:
- enlarged teeth
- abnormal bone density
- altered pupils
- unusual scar formation
Voss considered these encouraging.
PERSONAL JOURNAL
The final journal no longer resembles scientific writing.
Selected entries,
- “The other side is not hostile.”
- “Hostility is a human interpretation of incompatible mathematics.”
- “Religion discovered symbols.”
- “Physics explains symbols.”
- “The distinction no longer matters.”
- “I can hear structures thinking.”
- “The cave has begun remembering me.”
FINAL ENTRY
Only one page. No equations. No diagrams.
Just one sentence written repeatedly until the pencil tore through the paper.
“The door does not need to be opened.”
Below that, in a different handwriting, darker and more deliberate:
“It already remembers the way.”
